How the calculator works
This calculator starts from your room’s length and width, then subtracts a margin so the rug doesn’t touch the walls — leaving the floor visible around the edges, which is what makes a room feel intentionally furnished rather than wall-to-wall carpeted.
The margin depends on the room: living rooms use about 18 inches per side, bedrooms about 15 inches, dining rooms about 24 inches (so chairs can slide out without catching an edge), and home offices about 12 inches. The calculator then matches your space to the closest standard rug size that fits comfortably within that margin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should a rug touch the walls?
No — leaving a border of bare floor (usually 12–24 inches, depending on the room) makes a space feel proportioned and intentional rather than like wall-to-wall carpet.
Should furniture legs be on or off the rug?
In most living rooms, at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should rest on the rug. In smaller rooms, all furniture legs on the rug tends to look more cohesive.
What size rug do I need for a dining table?
As a rule of thumb, leave about 24 inches of rug beyond the table’s edge on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.
Can I use a rug size between two standard sizes?
