Why this size?
Estimate based on the measurements you entered and common drapery conventions. Always measure your own window and rod before ordering.
How the calculator works
Curtain length is measured from the rod (not the window frame) down to wherever you want the fabric to end, then adjusted slightly for the finish you want: a touch short of the floor for a clean line, higher for a tailored break, or longer for a puddle.
Fabric width works differently. To hang with soft folds instead of looking flat, you need roughly two to three times the width of your window in total fabric, split across your panels.
Quick tips for buying curtains
- Always measure from the rod, not the wall. Curtain length is the drop from where the rings sit, which is usually an inch or two below the rod itself.
- Mount the rod high and wide. Placing it 4 to 6 inches above the frame and extending it past the frame on each side makes the window look larger and lets light in when panels are open.
- Don’t skimp on fullness. Flat, skimpy panels are the most common curtain mistake. 2x fullness is a safe default for most rooms.
- Round up on length. A slightly long curtain can be hemmed; a slightly short one can’t be fixed without adding fabric.
- Steam, don’t iron, after unpacking. Most drapery fabric hangs out its packaging creases within a day or two on the rod.
Common curtain lengths
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| 63″ | Small or cafe-style windows, short drops |
| 84″ | Standard 8-foot ceilings |
| 96″ | Floor-to-ceiling or 9-foot ceilings |
| 108″ | Tall windows and high ceilings |
| 120″ | Extra-tall windows, dramatic drops |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should curtains touch the floor?
A slight gap of half an inch to an inch above the floor is the most common look. It reads as intentional without dragging or collecting dust.
How wide should my curtain rod be?
Extend it about 4 to 6 inches beyond each side of the window frame. This lets panels fully clear the glass when open and makes the window appear wider.
How many panels do I need?
Most windows use two panels, one on each side. Very wide windows or high fullness ratios may need more panels to reach the required total fabric width.
What fullness ratio should I choose?
2x the window width is a reliable standard for most fabrics. Lighter, sheer fabrics can go fuller (2.5 to 3x); heavier fabrics often look fine at 1.5 to 2x.
