Why this size?
Estimate based on the measurements you entered and common interior-design guidelines. Adjust to fit your furniture and personal taste.
How the calculator works
This calculator starts from your room’s length and width, then subtracts a margin so the rug doesn’t touch the walls, leaving the floor visible around the edges. That’s what makes a room feel intentionally furnished rather than wall-to-wall carpeted.
The margin depends on the room: living rooms use about 18 inches per side, bedrooms about 15 inches, dining rooms about 24 inches (so chairs can slide out without catching an edge), and home offices about 12 inches. The calculator then matches your space to the closest standard rug size that fits comfortably within that margin.
Quick tips for choosing the right rug
- Measure the room, not the furniture. Wall-to-wall dimensions give you the outer limit; the calculator subtracts a sensible margin automatically.
- Round down, not up, when in doubt. A rug that’s slightly smaller than the “perfect” size still looks intentional; one that’s too big will crowd the walls and make the room feel smaller.
- Think about traffic paths. In hallways or open-plan spaces, leave enough bare floor on the busiest side so people aren’t stepping straight onto the rug’s edge.
- Layer if you’re unsure. A smaller accent rug on top of a larger jute or sisal rug is a common way to get texture without committing to one exact size.
- Check the drop for round or oval rugs. The same margin logic applies, but measure across the widest point of the room in each direction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should a rug touch the walls?
No. Leaving a border of bare floor (usually 12–24 inches, depending on the room) makes a space feel proportioned and intentional rather than like wall-to-wall carpet.
Should furniture legs be on or off the rug?
In most living rooms, at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should rest on the rug. In smaller rooms, all furniture legs on the rug tends to look more cohesive.
What size rug do I need for a dining table?
As a rule of thumb, leave about 24 inches of rug beyond the table’s edge on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.
Can I use a rug size between two standard sizes?
Custom and cut-to-size rugs are available from many retailers, but standard sizes are typically more affordable and easier to find. This calculator recommends the closest standard size for that reason.
