Enter your frames and wall size, then press Calculate to see a suggested layout.

Estimate based on the measurements you entered, assuming frames of a uniform size. Adjust spacing to taste once frames are on the wall.

How the calculator works

This calculator tries every grid arrangement (rows × columns) that fits your frame count, then picks the one whose total width and height come closest to matching your wall’s proportions without spilling past its edges.

Each frame is spaced evenly from its neighbors using the gap you set, and the whole arrangement is meant to be centered on the wall. Measure out from the middle in both directions when you start hanging.

Quick tips for a gallery wall

  • Lay it out on the floor first. Arrange your frames on the floor (or trace them on butcher paper) before putting a single nail in the wall.
  • Keep spacing consistent. 2–3 inches between frames reads as a cohesive grid; wider gaps start to look like separate groupings.
  • Hang at eye level. Center the whole arrangement around 57–60 inches from the floor, which is standard eye height for most adults.
  • Mix orientations sparingly. A uniform grid of same-size frames (what this calculator plans for) is the easiest layout to get right on a first try.
  • Use a level and a helper. Even a few degrees of tilt becomes obvious once several frames are hung together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my frames aren’t all the same size?

This calculator assumes uniform frame sizes for a clean grid. For mixed sizes, lay frames out on the floor first and use the largest frame’s dimensions as your spacing guide.

How much space should I leave around the whole arrangement?

Aim to keep the arrangement within about 60–70% of the wall’s width so it doesn’t feel cramped against the edges or nearby furniture.

Should the gallery wall be centered on the wall or on furniture below it?

If there’s a sofa, bed, or console table below, center the arrangement on that piece of furniture rather than the wall itself. It reads as more intentional.

What spacing do professionals typically use?

2 to 3 inches is the most common spacing for a tight, gallery-style grid. Larger gaps (4–6 inches) give a more relaxed, airy feel.
